Turns out I'm wrong. I can tell you quite a bit. First of all, it's called <a href="http://skythewood.blogspot.de/p/gate-of-twilight.html" target="_blank">Gate of Twilight,</a> and this is the title page:<br />
<br /><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHZGEPrnPN0audfxjX3noVYDGEscPxL7qFFvfYMmV7GC2QNIcWrf8z41FiuPO5ou4K_f6_r254E82TyOxXqoooPPgVXvCTyFeEjnO1i_wpdicAQFbZ2MSNrCowz3hUP4CSgNDjnMEazC0/s1600/Untitled.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHZGEPrnPN0audfxjX3noVYDGEscPxL7qFFvfYMmV7GC2QNIcWrf8z41FiuPO5ou4K_f6_r254E82TyOxXqoooPPgVXvCTyFeEjnO1i_wpdicAQFbZ2MSNrCowz3hUP4CSgNDjnMEazC0/s400/Untitled.png" width="281" /></a></div>
<br /><br />
Instead of some plot overview, why don't I just give you the foreword I wrote for it?<br />
<br /><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">There's nothing new under the sun.<br /><br /> You've all heard that old adage, and you all know how true it is, especially in regard to fictional narrative. Since <i>Harry Potter</i> redefined the 'Young Adult' genre, each year has seen countless novels on teenagers with extraordinary powers living in secret worlds just next door to ours, or finding their place in a world with extraordinary dangers, or standing strong as the only defense against an overwhelming evil. Fantasy literature in general, it seems, has not changed since the days of Conan the barbarian and Bilbo the hobbit and only seen a few nuances in the definition of heroism, and whether it's even possible, as Michael Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone reminds us. And as I write these lines, it looks as though the biggest hit in cinemas this year is going to be Star Wars. Part seven.<br /><br /> There's nothing new under the sun, really.<br /><br /> Except that's not true.<br /><br /> While heroic fantasy in itself is a genre that thrives on cliche and stereotype, it still offers the opportunity for a writer to go beyond its boundaries, simply for the fact that it does thrive on cliche and stereotype, and that nothing in the world is easier than to surprise readers by playing with their expectations, and then breaking them. This is how <i>Game of Thrones</i> revolutionized the genre: by setting up a fantasy world, and then allowing real-world medieval politics to kick its butt. What makes it so enthralling is the simple fact we all know the things happening in the war between Wolf, Stag, Lion and Dragon could be real, because that's how people are, that's how war is, that's what politics often mean.<br /><br /> The <i>Gate of Twilight</i> series, the very beginning of which lies before your eyes at this very moment, is going to surprise you. It's going to be something new standing on the shoulders of something very old. It's classic heroic fantasy, the kind of plot you've grown to like if you're a fan of the genre, but at the same time, it's something very different. It's set around a central conflict that, unlike Sauron's search for the One Ring, only a handful of people all throughout the world know it even exists. It's about young people with extraordinary abilities destined to be heroes – with most others around them aware that they are – yet the journeys they undertake may not have the outcome they, or anybody else, expected.<br /><br /> If the <i>Gate of Twilight</i> series has a theme, it's <i>Don't Be Afraid Of The Danger You Can See, Be Afraid Of What You Cannot See</i>.<br /><br /> You'll see what I mean with that once you're done reading.<br /><br /> Have fun!</span>Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-10458310705140305052016-05-10T18:12:00.002+02:002016-05-10T18:12:36.517+02:00Play Romance is Dead online!Yup, it's true! You can now play <a href="http://talltalesvn.blogspot.de/2013/11/im-not-dead-but-romance-is.html" target="_blank">Romance is Dead</a> online for free - on <a href="http://sandbox-adventure.com/romance-is-dead.html" target="_blank">Sandbox Adventure</a>, a site that converts Ren'Py games into browser-based games.<br />
<br />
And that's all for today.Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-70199755766655132602016-04-26T18:16:00.002+02:002016-04-26T18:18:31.880+02:00The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Proof to follow.Well.<br />
<br />
It looks as though I'm really not the most diligent person when it comes to keeping a blog updated, especially when there's so little news to actually spread. Some people (<a href="http://storycade.com/visual-novel-romance-dead/" target="_blank">storycade.com</a>, I'm looking at you) even said that I have gone "mysteriously silent" in 2014. Truth is, I have been a little silent here, but there's not much mysterious about it.<br />
<br />
The reason for my silence is mostly that the projects I've been working on since early 2015 have either been delayed, or they were not exceptionally noteworthy. The most noteworthy thing to report is <a href="http://www.winterwolves.com/SOTWbadblood.htm" target="_blank">the Bad Blood DLC for Seasons of the Wolf</a>, a continuation of the story of Althea and Shea in Winter Wolves' Loren fantasy RPG setting. Any and all of the following elements may appear in said DLC:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://static1.winterwolves.com/assets/SOTWbadblood/badblood.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://static1.winterwolves.com/assets/SOTWbadblood/badblood.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Aside from that, I've been working at a classic Japanese-teen-themed VN with strong supernatural elements - that's the project that's unfortunately been delayed until 2017. I would love to tell you more, but I'd rather keep this to myself for now until production continues.<br />
<br />
I've also started writing a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_novel" target="_blank">Light Novel</a> for a young publisher who approached me with a neat story idea. It's very much classic high fantasy with a twist. Book 1 is complete, and as soon as it's published, I'll be sure to mention it here too. But until that happens, again, I'll keep the silence.<br />
<br />
So here's the one thing I'm not keeping quiet about:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://img.itch.io/aW1hZ2UvNjAxNTAvMjcxMjA2LnBuZw==/315x250%23c/ygKemK.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://img.itch.io/aW1hZ2UvNjAxNTAvMjcxMjA2LnBuZw==/315x250%23c/ygKemK.png" /></a></div>
This is <a href="https://atpprojects.itch.io/thephotographer" target="_blank">The Photographer</a>, my contribution to <a href="http://www.nanoreno.org/" target="_blank">NaNoRenO 2016</a>. It's a collaboration with mikey of <a href="https://atpprojects.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">ATP Projects</a> fame - you may remember me recommending his still fantastic Ori, Ochi, Onoe to you in this blog. He had a ton of pictures taken in Venice and wanted to make something of it, and I had the idea of using them as a story about a relationship on the brink of collapse. So I wrote it, mikey put it into VN form, and the end result is what you see here.<br />
<br />
Well, and that's already all there is to tell at the moment.<br />
<br />
Oh, and one more thing.<br />
<br />
I'm currently working for <a href="https://twitter.com/unwontedstudios" target="_blank">Unwonted Studios</a>, writing the script for their latest cyberpunk-themed VN. More as soon as I'm allowed to say more.<br />
<br />

Thought I had abandoned this blog a year ago, didn't ya? Well, turns out I haven't. I just had very little time (okay, and motivation) to update, especially since there wasn't much new to report.<br />
<br />
Well, now there is, and before I get into all the things that <i>didn't</i> work out this year, here's one thing that did work out:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOSMQcCR-BUjAnsYtj6f_uTG59mSrxYg9zEhu5OnUDfGqICtIVeqInbY-wvBVNYBsQu2BGtZA3atCDQH8ThHKVteHCP3kMjs6VkKKK7yAhxV-IB_ocVNfnNGwtIGEJANXsUXrFpa8myFFB/s1600/031_mainmenu.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOSMQcCR-BUjAnsYtj6f_uTG59mSrxYg9zEhu5OnUDfGqICtIVeqInbY-wvBVNYBsQu2BGtZA3atCDQH8ThHKVteHCP3kMjs6VkKKK7yAhxV-IB_ocVNfnNGwtIGEJANXsUXrFpa8myFFB/s1600/031_mainmenu.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
This, my friends, is <a href="http://winterwolves.com/seasonsofthewolf.htm" target="_blank">Seasons of the Wolf</a>, produced and published by <a href="http://winterwolves.com/" target="_blank">Winter Wolves</a>,written by yours truly. It's an RPG/VN hybrid and essentially my take on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monomyth" target="_blank">monomyth</a>, or Hero's Journey, if you know that name better.<br />
<br />
So what is it about?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD1k1bwSatqmR-n8dLdiV2PuxHXfRfuPbRvREk3AV0wrxlu6WtM-8tFCRxWHvfwTogfgTKiNbz3ySzUOU42jsU45LJfl-y-ka2WNhBRZ1aaOpoz4i2mcXQ2nKRe9_TE5x479qQILLD9ra_/s1600/031_attributes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjD1k1bwSatqmR-n8dLdiV2PuxHXfRfuPbRvREk3AV0wrxlu6WtM-8tFCRxWHvfwTogfgTKiNbz3ySzUOU42jsU45LJfl-y-ka2WNhBRZ1aaOpoz4i2mcXQ2nKRe9_TE5x479qQILLD9ra_/s1600/031_attributes.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Let's hear it from Winter Wolves themselves:<br />
"In this role-playing game, set in the same fantasy world as the
award-winning Loren the Amazon princess, you'll play as Shea or Althea,
twins from the far-away village Ninim. In just the course of one year,
you will experience many storylines and sidequests; situations and
events where your own choices influence the very end of the game."<br />
<br />
Ah yes. Well, what that text doesn't mention is that it's also about a whole lot of hot baths.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHVvB_8_5cL_p5qrdy2iV-Q7lR23M0dOPEl_1JiaZLMG3mnLkQa155e71p_HBMtzlt4YgPTgEbXx-YzF1pzPtQ004cb1qTcgoD6fbXiXkW7dCon0djgIqFm1hz3Et4Y3i-_sT77QNDhyphenhyphenSP/s1600/031_hotbath.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHVvB_8_5cL_p5qrdy2iV-Q7lR23M0dOPEl_1JiaZLMG3mnLkQa155e71p_HBMtzlt4YgPTgEbXx-YzF1pzPtQ004cb1qTcgoD6fbXiXkW7dCon0djgIqFm1hz3Et4Y3i-_sT77QNDhyphenhyphenSP/s1600/031_hotbath.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Well, taking hot baths and going on adventures inbetween, at least.<br />
<br />
In any case, it's a really expansive game, easily 15-20 hours of playtime for a playthrough with all the side quests - oh, and you won't be able to see everything in a single session. The thing is, you choose which of the twins' roles you play, and each of them has their own sidestory in the form of romantic interests you may or may not pursue. As usual in Winter Wolves games, it's up to you which gender you play as and which sexual orientation you wish to follow - none of the twins is superior to the other and everything's possible.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg9aq0vIpKGjsWiO4qWNj9KLWxy1c6FWeLuyCJkd9FjvbBi1ElFiXGYGtMOyNs3Pxn9N35EGkcerAoHo0F08EBEdzz6ECQHms5xiB15gndI9ExXF_SVDiujurX7uNTpJoXzWITRFAjV46e/s1600/031_wolfpack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhg9aq0vIpKGjsWiO4qWNj9KLWxy1c6FWeLuyCJkd9FjvbBi1ElFiXGYGtMOyNs3Pxn9N35EGkcerAoHo0F08EBEdzz6ECQHms5xiB15gndI9ExXF_SVDiujurX7uNTpJoXzWITRFAjV46e/s1600/031_wolfpack.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Eventually, you'll have a party of eight people to romance and go on adventure with, and you go on an epic journey that leads you...<br />
<br />
Oh, heck, why not let Jariel tell you all that?<br />
<br />

AdventureX is the point-and-click-adventure expo, hosted in the University of East Anglia, London, UK, usually in early December. This year, it's December 7th / 8th - and I'm going to be there! Together with the guys who were Skybound Studios and are now <a href="http://everture.co.uk/" target="_blank">Everture Studios, Ltd.</a> And we're going to bring a whole lotta monkeys with us. No, seriously!<br />
<br />
So if you're in or near London on the upcoming weekend, why not visit us?<br />

That's mostly because I think anything that's not really news doesn't deserve a blog entry. However, something unusual has happened: <a href="http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=24420" target="_blank">Someone</a> has written a review for <strong><a href="http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/download/file.php?id=23695" target="_blank">Romance is Dead</a></strong>, my most recent title. And I'd like to share the thoughts of the one who calls him/herself "Pir8Heart". Avast, matey!<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
Not necessarily in any sort of format, but here I go~!<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Maddie</span> - Nnn, I didn't really feel that there was too much going on with her, and I also feel the bit about her damaged sense of smell plays into Adam's path a bit too cleanly, but I felt her personality was in the right place. Leaning a bit towards being a static heroine who simply reacts, but her overall demeanor and love for science earns her points in my book. ^3^<br /><br />Ordering the guys from most favourite to not-so-most favourite; Maurice, Adam, Don. Does not mean I hated any of them. Also MaddiexAdam was my favourite couple, despite the thing about Maddie owning Adam's physical heart.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Maurice</span> - My second path choice. I got two of his ends, the one with the text error (I still haven't downloaded the update.) and Voodoo Queen. I was already curious about him during my initial run, but the latter end's path definitely sealed him as my favourite character. His entire backstory was colourful enough to keep me hooked, and I felt I could really relate to his distinct pursuit of something he was passionate about (Well, minus the vampire immortality). Plus I found his entire personality and get-up really fun. x3</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Adam</span> - My third path choice. I've only gotten his Wanderer end. I found his out-of-place style and rhyming tendency real endearing throughout my entire readthrough thus far. I suppose my main problem is that I felt his final scene was too short. Mind you, it got across a great message, and adding needless drama would ruin the feel of the Maddie/Adam dynamic, but it still feels subjectively short to me, and there's not really much I can do about that. Despite this, deep down I feel that I enjoyed Wanderer more than Voodoo Queen since it was less of a stretch. But I did enjoy their overall relationship, especially the church scene. The thing about him being LSU's anatomical dummy was pretty depressing, but but it also feels a bit outlandish that LSU would use a corpse as an anatomical dummy. Do none of the students know about that? ^_^ Oh, and I totally picked up on the 1950's foreshadowing for Adam's path about 10 minutes in. x3</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Don</span> - My first readthrough was mainly me going by my gut feelings. When that landed me Maurice's bad end, I immediately undid the appropriate choice and found that I could only achieve Don's [best?] end. Overall, he came off as quite adorkable for some reason, and his way of helping out <s>Maddie</s> others struck a chord in me. Overall, his good end felt somewhat... anti-climactic. Like, at first I didn't really believe the resolution would be that simple. And although I wanted more of dem sappy feelz I really wouldn't have expected that sorta' thing from you. :< But either way, it made the brief afterstory feel like a bit of a stretch. </blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-weight: bold;">Bernard</span> - lolwut<br /><br />As for the <span style="font-weight: bold;">story</span> itself, the subject matter and the setting at hand made for an interesting and unusual take on paranormal-type stories, and the use of rich history really earns some points with me. Now, the last (and 3rd) work I've read from you is <span style="font-style: italic;">ADRIFT</span>, and in contrast the actual variety between the routes. Apart from not being <span style="font-style: italic;">too</span> elaborate, I don't really have any major problems.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Aesthetics</span>. The sprites themselves really fit the atmosphere; if I had to name one in particular, Maddie's sprite when she's really startled is hilarious, probably because of its lack of major shading. xD The font clashed very nicely with the textbox, though I'm a bit iffy about the name-header. The menu is also pretty stylish, and it sorta' reminds me of a film strip for some odd reason. x3<br /><br />Err, <span style="font-weight: bold;">rating</span> this... ... maybe... 7.5/10 for a Ren'Py project. I can't say there's anything that particularly reached out to me. Reading back on what I've typed, perhaps Maurice and Don's good ends could be considered a bit of a stretch; Don's relationship with Maddie and the entire premise of Voodoo Queen's afterstory (though it was so hilarious I just had to let it slide XD). Despite this, all of the elements above sync really well for <span style="font-style: italic;">Romance is Dead</span>, making it a stylish and memorable read.</blockquote>

<a href="http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/download/file.php?id=23695" target="_blank">Romance is Dead</a> is a short, slightly macabre and very cute story about... well, life, death and everything in between these two. It takes place in the city of New Orleans, one late October, disturbingly close to Halloween, when, as everybody knows, things tend to happen that somehow breach the boundary between this world and the next. Thus, the title screen displays a graveyard.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Protagonist of the tale is Madelaine "Maddie" Washington, student of biology at UNO (that's University of New Orleans, not United Nations). Biology is the science of all living things, and Maddie's life currently strongly focuses on studying that subject. Unfortunately, her love life isn't exactly up to snuff, so to speak, and Maddie has been going through quite a few unsatisfying relationships in the past, with her most recent breaking up only a few weeks ago. Because of that, her opinion of such relationships can be summed up quite handily:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfDUCi9eGM9EF0F0PExsRobtjPkg-4tNjv12U5mm-4eqXrrL9C-aX_YGD6Bo3iHhsFSlvQIvPikkeJUgjh6PYmyWxZ_chiQM_pQAz3kJrxopq6cUWArpI5x_98JZlLpvJ-R0qkHRTcfWUe/s1600/screenshot0003.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfDUCi9eGM9EF0F0PExsRobtjPkg-4tNjv12U5mm-4eqXrrL9C-aX_YGD6Bo3iHhsFSlvQIvPikkeJUgjh6PYmyWxZ_chiQM_pQAz3kJrxopq6cUWArpI5x_98JZlLpvJ-R0qkHRTcfWUe/s320/screenshot0003.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Of course, there wouldn't be much of a story if Maddie's views on that didn't get shaken over the course of it, and responsible for these tremors are a few very unusual people. The first of them is Adam:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVmXksDmiYodD4FUeVWgE9horp7thAaLO3E4D7-NuHKgnnHLVbLCaXYOkLZvw-YqeBDLV4t5vGiUw4HjoB4vDcliCfz1y6UAXKnUIm3ZiYNporTjISd17JlqE-9F1jBwtZQWdmN3A_Zvt9/s1600/screenshot0004.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVmXksDmiYodD4FUeVWgE9horp7thAaLO3E4D7-NuHKgnnHLVbLCaXYOkLZvw-YqeBDLV4t5vGiUw4HjoB4vDcliCfz1y6UAXKnUIm3ZiYNporTjISd17JlqE-9F1jBwtZQWdmN3A_Zvt9/s320/screenshot0004.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Adam looks a little like James Dean in his prime, and his behavior and speech only add to that picture. He claims to feel inexplicably attracted to Maddie, which is one of the stranger pickup lines she has heard - especially since Adam doesn't seem to really <i>want</i> to pick her up. Or... does he want to, and it's just a very clever act?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Then there's Maurice:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvweP7SKUrjQNBIGcdHC2rxznTMufcWzJg2wpN0PCa70CFpSwVQXuu2fVmqdphbiqEW_Zb9rnpNeOvPEX4-ln3FDL579PdcFeAeyMN3PH3HBTNZHDvMgVU8NoBCpmsWcOEu1rZqGbadSVy/s1600/screenshot0005.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvweP7SKUrjQNBIGcdHC2rxznTMufcWzJg2wpN0PCa70CFpSwVQXuu2fVmqdphbiqEW_Zb9rnpNeOvPEX4-ln3FDL579PdcFeAeyMN3PH3HBTNZHDvMgVU8NoBCpmsWcOEu1rZqGbadSVy/s320/screenshot0005.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Maurice has all the glamour and poise of a French aristocrat, including the natural charm. He seems to believe that Maddie has a secret she doesn't wish to share but that he is very interested in unraveling. And aside from that, he may also have <i>another</i> interest in Maddie...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Finally, there's Don:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9KIZR02VAu12OD-khkHTe9hUtEPvyHztWMqgW_sqzGx_2EQyo6bCP36CnDQN73WrvxRylOkhuZdWx_BOG52NvmVY-cG5CxjO1B1b5ovLpyxfhxztEP6qGbBkUPffe56iF2kkWVXiVTvaI/s1600/screenshot0006.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9KIZR02VAu12OD-khkHTe9hUtEPvyHztWMqgW_sqzGx_2EQyo6bCP36CnDQN73WrvxRylOkhuZdWx_BOG52NvmVY-cG5CxjO1B1b5ovLpyxfhxztEP6qGbBkUPffe56iF2kkWVXiVTvaI/s320/screenshot0006.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Don is one of Maddie's fellow students, a genuinely nice young gentleman who treats her with the utmost respect. He studies engineering and would be the most normal, unassuming of the three people Maddie meets if he didn't have... well, a lack of physical presence in general and a lack of lower body in particular. And an interesting history to go with that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
All characters were designed and drawn by the incredibly talented and fast <a href="http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=23493" target="_blank">Card-Queen</a> of the Lemmasoft Forums.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I usually don't make a lot of fuss about the user interface, but this time, my UI artist <a href="http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=23641" target="_blank">Luce Jumble</a> really outdid herself. I mean, even our <i>settings screen</i> looks amazing! Have you ever seen a so tastefully macabre settings screen such as this?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizbtFIxZu58tS66FdejjzSJaQOVoi7cbRXX2BNAE1BnG0P7qjMb_lUJrkv443_KpuOo6vor_GQuG6G7xStNFyY1oH81jvcyMLefZkOVpC5GjEjN3dxoMyubx83LuEAvmWazkCSbR_pFD9z/s1600/screenshot0007.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizbtFIxZu58tS66FdejjzSJaQOVoi7cbRXX2BNAE1BnG0P7qjMb_lUJrkv443_KpuOo6vor_GQuG6G7xStNFyY1oH81jvcyMLefZkOVpC5GjEjN3dxoMyubx83LuEAvmWazkCSbR_pFD9z/s320/screenshot0007.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
With such beauty for the eyes and a wonderfully morbid dark jazz soundtrack, Romance is Dead may not be my longest or my best work yet but certainly my most stylish. <a href="http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/download/file.php?id=236959" target="_blank">Download it here</a> - as with most of my works, it's free!</div>

<br />
I know what you're saying: "Bionic Heart 2"? But you never posted anything about "Bionic Heart 1" in this blog! You're right - I never did. The reason is that I didn't have anything to do with the original <b>Bionic Heart</b>. However, Winter Wolves hired me for the sequel - or rather, the sequel to the canon ending of Bionic Heart. So if you played <b>Bionic Heart </b>before, you will now finally know which of the many many endings of that story <i>really</i> happened.<br />
<br />
To all others, a short introduction: <b>Bionic Heart 2</b> is a cyberpunk science fiction VN that takes place in the year 2100. Due to climate change, Earth now only knows one sort of weather: rain. People, however, have adapted to the new circumstances and are basically living their lives much as before, and the last few locations where the sun shines at least for a few days a year are hot tourism spots.<br />
<br />
Technology has greatly improved; humanoid robots are widely used, and while full AIs are still a long way to go, computer systems now easily understand voice input, though for most purposes, keyboards are still being used (there was a short trend in the early 2080s to entirely do away with them, but a sharp drop in literacy among children resulted from that, and governments worldwide quickly acted to keep them in use, requiring official forms to be submitted in "certified typed form" and not converted from a speech input).<br />
<br />
Of course, some people are never content with what they have and want more:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiedrHoJgOOM7BgCvBZ_ELnEESXO3fZESbdkhqwAq8ekyt8_GHJ71_dE_SQSNzExWqv7lL4QQl0t2wKsFwPond15sU9b9oNTGiYRZHRc-lkmlwq8T_0yxdjryOIMyixYBggipfzw0EdhF-Y/s1600/markrichard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiedrHoJgOOM7BgCvBZ_ELnEESXO3fZESbdkhqwAq8ekyt8_GHJ71_dE_SQSNzExWqv7lL4QQl0t2wKsFwPond15sU9b9oNTGiYRZHRc-lkmlwq8T_0yxdjryOIMyixYBggipfzw0EdhF-Y/s320/markrichard.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This "more" is the world's first cybernetic organism, a human brain in a robotic body known by the name of Tanya Vanic. The two gentlemen you see here are Nanotech's CEO and Head of RnD, both responsible for her creation. They lost her in the course of part one of <b>Bionic Heart</b>. Now they want her back, and as they are powerful, not only is this a danger to Tanya but also the people who helped her escape - Luke Black, the protagonist of <b>Bionic Heart</b>, his girlfriend Helen and his friend Tom. Here's all four of them together:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTuxV-s5OBF_zOHgL-Cn5fEUQO3uV6BEBg6HKSq0mNyWIjO8hUeiz3907IeEuattxuA2HsjkXQEzfMJqcdQ8xZSdK0-DWGgB1P6bg73OiQQX_YKfhGBDo6FBhZNzZD95DMzN9S-ANJPuZk/s1600/grateful.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTuxV-s5OBF_zOHgL-Cn5fEUQO3uV6BEBg6HKSq0mNyWIjO8hUeiz3907IeEuattxuA2HsjkXQEzfMJqcdQ8xZSdK0-DWGgB1P6bg73OiQQX_YKfhGBDo6FBhZNzZD95DMzN9S-ANJPuZk/s320/grateful.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Bionic Heart 2</b> begins right after the events of the first game. Tanya helped Luke, Helen and Tom escape from Nanotech by putting them on a shuttle to a secret base on Mars. She herself is planning to stay on Earth and find a way of foiling Nanotech's plans, which seem to be much larger than just the creation of a single cyborg. Hopefully, she can uncover their machinations.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, the events of part 1 have attracted the attention of the police, though not exactly the top brass of the police...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTL51IailT_64Pfn7uYK5Wc14IhvlxrrRGRlEiDIrh2LzzBIaDePOo7NDYJ5Dni7M3O5G0RsS3hAypt6AI9DXTIoEXRUS_dtsAZwlAlkV37yyNgaEbB2Z27ZOoy3ZROGt90BkUo-qVlXHb/s1600/tinarob.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTL51IailT_64Pfn7uYK5Wc14IhvlxrrRGRlEiDIrh2LzzBIaDePOo7NDYJ5Dni7M3O5G0RsS3hAypt6AI9DXTIoEXRUS_dtsAZwlAlkV37yyNgaEbB2Z27ZOoy3ZROGt90BkUo-qVlXHb/s320/tinarob.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Tina and Rob are two ordinary London policemen dragged into the scenario by sheer circumstance who only in time realize they have found a situation that may very well be over their heads. But who can they trust? Because of the events of <b>Bionic Heart</b>, Tanya is a wanted criminal. Surely there must be something about the accusations against her - they can't all be false, or can they?<br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Bionic Heart 2</b> does something very unusual for a VN: it splits the plot in two, allowing you to follow what's happening on Earth and on Mars separately. There are four different POVs (Luke, Tom, Tanya, Tina), and decisions you make in each influcence what's happening in the others. The most unusual thing, however, is that you may spectacularly fail either the Mars or the Earth part - and the rest of the VN will continue! That's right, you may lose three of the game's protagonists and you still have a story to complete. And doing so will even unlock endings you couldn't unlock any other way!<br />
<br />
I'm quite proud of this story, even though I had to work within the restrictions of a pre-existing game. It's one of the most multi-faceted VNs I have ever written. <a href="http://www.winterwolves.com/bionicheart2.htm" target="_blank">There's really no reason why you shouldn't buy it right now</a>, from WinterWolves. If you're uncertain if it's your cup of tea, <a href="http://www.winterwolves.com/download.php?game=BionicHeart2.exe" target="_blank">here's a free demo version,</a> and for a measly €15, you get a full-length sci-fi VN with tons of replay value.<br />
<br />
Go get it today!<br />
Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-88264407571765333712013-02-06T18:27:00.001+01:002013-02-06T18:27:18.859+01:00Spoiler alert!Hey, everybody,<br />
<br />
while I still can't tell you all much about the project I'm currently making with <a href="http://www.skyboundstudios.co.uk/" target="_blank">Skybound Studios</a>, I think I can at least drop a little spoiler about what this game will be about. The best way to do that would be to just show you my main inspiration:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXHNJNLB4nny6NqVxoyazay_Kn0psKOR6qNshTn1ZMEaiJQ8Ss6kZctMcdB1AMoHgAwp_qIkbUnaDZL8sXyqaJ5FHDDqrsnYEE23a_9JHYxtRBubKT_PWYsTETdRx-O33iFJdSXrSZLXfE/s1600/800px-Japanese_Macaque_Fuscata_Image_354.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXHNJNLB4nny6NqVxoyazay_Kn0psKOR6qNshTn1ZMEaiJQ8Ss6kZctMcdB1AMoHgAwp_qIkbUnaDZL8sXyqaJ5FHDDqrsnYEE23a_9JHYxtRBubKT_PWYsTETdRx-O33iFJdSXrSZLXfE/s320/800px-Japanese_Macaque_Fuscata_Image_354.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Yeah, that's it. If you know where this picture comes from, you have a pretty good idea where the game will be set, at least if you combine it with what I already told you earlier about it.<br />
<br />
On a totally unrelated note, it won't be long until <a href="http://www.winterwolves.com/" target="_blank">Winter Wolves</a> releases <a href="http://www.winterwolves.com/bionicheart.htm" target="_blank">Bionic Heart</a> 2, to which I wrote the script. The second part is a definite step up from the first, both in length and in story complexity, so if you're into SciFi (and especially into the Cyberpunk subgenre), this may be a game you want to buy.<br />
<br />
I'll keep you posted on any news on both Bionic Heart and my current project-in-work.<br />
<br />Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-11761583729417243212013-01-30T13:30:00.001+01:002013-01-30T13:30:18.391+01:00I've seen the future, brother - it is... mountainous?If I have been a little quiet during these last few days, then for good reason: I've been in the final stages of negotiating my next paid job. And what can I say: yesterday, I signed it. The guys who hire me are some absolutely lovely chaps from the United Kingdom known as <a href="http://www.skyboundstudios.co.uk/" target="_blank">Skybound Studios Ltd.</a> Skybound are a group of amazingly talented people, each of them with their own credit. Now they've decided to make games, and their next project is together with me.<br />
<br />
At this point, I cannot say much, only that the project involves mountains of some importance, and that it's set in the year 1628. And - it's not a visual novel. It's going to be a classic graphic adventure game, my first step into that new world. VNs and adventures have a lot in common, as I detailed in <a href="http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/download/file.php?id=17075" target="_blank">these two presentations</a> I held in London for the AdventureX convention last winter, and I hope to make this game a fine example of how both genres can profit from one another.<br />
<br />
Another example of a multi-genre game, by the way, would be DaFool's <a href="http://www.elspethsgarden.com/" target="_blank">Elspeth's Garden</a>, which I incidentally also wrote the script for. Elspeth's Garden is a round-based tactical game / visual novel hybrid, one where you fight a war not only on the military but also on the diplomatic front, so your words are just as important as your deeds. (Actually, only nearly as important, because you cannot, well, get a "game over" in the diplomacy parts, but you certainly can make your military work a lot harder if you fail to gain allies with good diplomacy.)<br />
<br />
Right now, Elspeth's Garden is still in production, but I have high hopes that DaFool will be able to finish and release it somewhere this year, so you might want to bookmark his website along with mine.Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-31063113442351515832013-01-12T18:56:00.003+01:002013-01-13T14:32:08.984+01:00Five commercial OELVNs you should have playedIn the spirit of last week's list, here I give you another short collection of very, very good original English visual novels - only that this time, you won't be getting them for free. Each of these is a commercial production by indie developers, and I assure you, each of them is worth every penny (or cent, or whatever currency you're using) of your money. There's quality work out there, and their creators deserve the reward.<br />
<br />
Like the last time, this list is in no particular order at all.<br />
<br />

Dat Art! Cinders is probably one of the most beautiful games out there, simply in terms of art, and it has a story behind it you all know: Cinderella. Only that this Cinderella isn't like the one you know. This one, called "Cinders" by her abusive sisters, actually has a head of her own. How she uses it, however, is up to you. Is she a cunning and devious weaver of intrigues who secretly plots to steal ownership of the house back from her stepmother? Does she just want to get away from her family? Does she have the ambitions to become the princess from the fairytale, and if so, what lengths is she willing to go for that? And does she employ the help of her fairy godmother or her voodoo godmother? You decide!<br />

This sadly underappreciated gem is something for you if you're into classic visual novels - classic meaning "combining the quest for different romantic interests with solving a mystery plot in classic Japanese anime/manga style". The game takes an unusual approach for a few social situations by making you solve minigame puzzles in order to be successful in your attempts. Surprisingly, it works as the puzzles serve their metaphorical function more than sufficiently. For your money, you'll get more than enough hours of playtime - and a quite engaging story as well.<br />

Yeah, I know, even I couldn't overlook this one. Christine Love has already given us quite a few engaging pieces of writing, but with this sci-fi drama/tragedy, she's really outdone herself. There are enough fundamental issues of human life and human existence crammed into this plot to give Kurt Vonnegut himself a headache - and at the same time, the presentation and sheer quality of writing make it almost impossible to stop playing/reading this game. It doesn't help that I have a soft side for sci-fi, but even if you're not like me, you oughtn't miss this experience.<br />

Swashbucklers! Pirates! High seas high adventure in the 17th century! And in the middle of honorable buccaneers and proud sailships, a quite heroic female protagonist, out to explore the world, find treasure, chase love and eventually become... well, that remains to be seens, for it is your choice in the Heileen series. While the first two parts are classic VNs with some minor RPG elements, the third goes for a stat-building mechanic behind everything. Still, all three parts are well worth their money. Rarely has a game captured the spirit of swashbuckler romance as well as this one. Think of it as Sid Meier's "Pirates!" - the version for the ladies.<br />

Want mystery? Don't care about romance? Got a penchant for stories involving the supernatural? Then this series of games is just what you're looking for. In the role of a teenager who has the ability to relive the last few moments of anybody by touching his or her dead body, you get to solve murder cases - classic detective work, combined with learning some <i>very</i> disturbing facts about the people around you. Eventually, you'll stand before a magnificently crafted whodunit worthy of getting its own TV show. I've got to be honest here, though: I actually haven't played "Yousei" yet. However, judging from the first two titles in this series, it's probably going to be awesome as well.Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-38822650107130836352013-01-06T15:16:00.002+01:002013-01-06T19:44:18.566+01:00Five free OELVNs you should have playedHey everybody,<br />
<br />
while this is by no means a comprehensive list, I believe you'll find this helpful when deciding on what visual novel to read next. Many people are prejudiced against original English language VNs, but really, many are quality writing, not in the least inferior to their Japanese counterparts. This is what I think represents the cream of the crop. Note that these are not ranked, so number one on this list is in no way better or worse than number five. Note that all of these are non-commercial works, so don't hesitate to download them today!<br />

In my opinion, mikey's finest piece of writing yet. What originally appears to be a rather standard story about a troubled marriage slowly turning into a menage-a-trois turns into a beautiful tale of submission for the sake of love, dealing with hurt feelings and how far people are willing to go for a relationship. The twist ending is a little difficult to find, but more than worth it. Even the music of this game plays a part in the resolution of the mystery!<br />

While a little on the short side, The Elevator is probably the finest piece of non-traditional VN out there - both in style and in content. The art is distinctly non-manga, the writing follows classic detective stories more than it follows classic romance, there's a typical noir-SF element in the plot, and all of that together creates one of the most powerful experiences that visual novels can provide. Do not miss this!<br />

<h3>
<a href="http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/download/file.php?id=7038" target="_blank">3. [text] - A Summer Story</a> (sakevisual)</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-com_65OzIcEYzssyu9HR1diTpfo-54oOUmNdYwfr-1I6Fhd4TdiOxfNdGabl0654Adep3Mgwazw4UVvkBcxT5dZ8E1_uAGRbttF18PziQG3gGElyTvhKYJKr3f2SicONEFu3AE70SRqu/s1600/A-Summer-Story_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="255" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-com_65OzIcEYzssyu9HR1diTpfo-54oOUmNdYwfr-1I6Fhd4TdiOxfNdGabl0654Adep3Mgwazw4UVvkBcxT5dZ8E1_uAGRbttF18PziQG3gGElyTvhKYJKr3f2SicONEFu3AE70SRqu/s320/A-Summer-Story_3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Another shorter piece of writing, but this time, one of the most chilling experiences VNs have to offer. Using an unusual interface, this VN tells the story of a seemingly normal summer vacation through text messages the protagonist is exchanging with other people on her mobile phone. This unique presentation lulls you into a false sense of security replaying the game for its different endings, until you find out that sometimes the true endings aren't necessarily those that work out well for the protagonist...<br />

The screenshot for this one alone should show you that it's going to be a very special experience: Locked-In is an almost classic tale of trust and betrayal, with the twist that it's told from the perspective of a person suffering from locked-in syndrome - that is, she cannot move her body but is conscious to everything that happens around her. Who of the people around her are her allies? Who are her enemies? You'd better find out, or being locked-in may not be the worst thing to happen to you...<br />

Well, and after muddling with your minds so much and sending you through all these mystery VNs, here's finally a straightforward romantic story. So straightforward that it's even a kinetic novel - a VN without any branches. Read this as you would watch a movie - the best thing you can do is set the text to auto-advance at a place you can leisurely read it and then just enjoy. This sci-fi story about the measure of humanity and the true meaning of love is sure to you get your eyes teary. Get someone you really like in front of the screen with you - you're going to need to cuddle a lot afterwards.Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-36814842894428370742013-01-02T21:51:00.001+01:002013-01-02T22:00:00.801+01:00(A)drifting into 2013Happy new year, everybody! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
What you see here is the "box art" of <a href="http://adrift-vn.blogspot.de/" target="_blank">Adrift</a>, my longest visual novel so far. Breaking the 100,000 word threshold meant a lot to me, because this here can stand as probably my most "traditional" VN so far. What do I mean by traditional? Well, traditionally, VNs were about developing relationships with beautiful young women. And Adrift has these four ladies:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7u9eEy9Vhg4G7oJY9Uz-__niy1LZkqZQURfRiCBqPLpHb9maqnHLi6nCfqJJDb-PwOss8dwROfhgBLxz5-qhMk6rlyAoZctekcM3icMW0eRf10PaJBfvj2KYRh1qWTScT6I9MSVNTYHb1/s1600/lineup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="233" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7u9eEy9Vhg4G7oJY9Uz-__niy1LZkqZQURfRiCBqPLpHb9maqnHLi6nCfqJJDb-PwOss8dwROfhgBLxz5-qhMk6rlyAoZctekcM3icMW0eRf10PaJBfvj2KYRh1qWTScT6I9MSVNTYHb1/s400/lineup.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Yup, this time, I finally did what everybody asked of me and made this a game with several different girls whose story paths you can unlock and follow. But then again, it wouldn't be a Taleweaver game if this were another shallow romance, or would it? Naaah, of course not. Actually, Adrift is a sci-fi adventure/drama taking place at the bottom of the sea, or rather, in an underwater city named Bluetide.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The player takes the role of the Supervisor, a man locked inside a suspended animation tank inside the city who is usually kept in a state of trance where his subconscious controls several of the city's functions. There are also several artificial intelligences taking care of the city's residents, but everybody knows that you cannot trust the safety of people on computers alone, so the Supervisor functions as a safeguard in case the AIs make mistakes. This, of course, requires him to be connected to the systems of the city of all times. And one day, all of a sudden, this connection fails.<br />

Having no reliable way of controlling the city any longer, the Supervisor has to rely on four robots, the only systems he can still communicate with, to determine what happened that broke his connection. While exploring Bluetide, not only does he need to find a way to restore his access to the systems, but he must also gain the trust of above four women in order to help him with tasks his robots are unsuited for. And while interacting with them, he gets to know them a lot better than he was planning to...<br />

Adrift is a massive game - sixteen endings, many, many paths to explore, and difficult enough that I wrote a <a href="http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/download/file.php?id=12186" target="_blank">guide</a><i> </i>for it. Again, though, it's one of my non-commercial productions, with background art by my good buddy DaFool and all-original character and CG art by <a href="http://mangakaluna.deviantart.com/" target="_blank">mangakaluna</a>. <a href="http://www.indiedb.com/games/adrift-vn/downloads" target="_blank">Get it here</a>, and if you like it, I wouldn't mind if you dropped me a line.Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-10536178674409032952012-12-23T10:19:00.004+01:002013-08-26T09:13:56.825+02:00Something spiritual for the upcoming daysChristmas is almost upon us now, and I think this is the perfect time to introduce the VN I wrote next: <a href="http://www.indiedb.com/games/the-thirteenth-year/downloads/the-thirteenth-year-windows-build" target="_blank">The Thirteenth Year</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeAe-v6D3WsmtQnS9QhyphenhyphenFEIe54fXx-ffYFt3lJJdXpOWDkQY_nEm2LuGoG69jGKpZW96FInsEBSajEmIUww2J-q3kqYUiwJI3ZZ4QECgszBb5t4SH9mNIUZC-zrD3yncqyMjiM6uZVwazf/s1600/astellimain.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="187" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeAe-v6D3WsmtQnS9QhyphenhyphenFEIe54fXx-ffYFt3lJJdXpOWDkQY_nEm2LuGoG69jGKpZW96FInsEBSajEmIUww2J-q3kqYUiwJI3ZZ4QECgszBb5t4SH9mNIUZC-zrD3yncqyMjiM6uZVwazf/s320/astellimain.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Based on my novella "Astellis Pilgerschaft" (which would translate to "Astelli's Pilgrimage"), this is probably my most linear visual novel, and also my most unusual one. The story leads you through thirteen scenes, each from the viewpoint of a different character in a world that is vaguely steampunk in a few places and a little less developed in a few others. All these scenes have something in common: the person narrating the story meets a young child named Astelli, apparently on a pilgrimage.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIUu5ueiPE1KiRBM4sArhfWubUOH-1k6WfTyi_G5Z9kq53PGEFBLySw3MKc1vSINJZ8R-F95sme4YHFD0OoUa7c0k1Bd2nkh1tvS0YYGADt8kHo17K2u0Gd62IiKjGmihHhMCDtTygPzhK/s1600/thirteenth01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="187" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIUu5ueiPE1KiRBM4sArhfWubUOH-1k6WfTyi_G5Z9kq53PGEFBLySw3MKc1vSINJZ8R-F95sme4YHFD0OoUa7c0k1Bd2nkh1tvS0YYGADt8kHo17K2u0Gd62IiKjGmihHhMCDtTygPzhK/s320/thirteenth01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The story is presented a little like an animated picture book, with the pictures behind the text and the option to fade out the text in order to get a better look at the art (which, like the music, was created by my good buddy <a href="http://www.elspethsgarden.com/" target="_blank">DaFool</a>). Astelli's pilgrimage tales place in a changing world, one where wars can still start for little reason (and do) and where religion and spirituality have greatly different meaning depending on where you go and who you talk to. Just as Astelli is on a journey to find spiritual enlightment, so do all the other characters of the story have their own opinions and views on religion, and it is in the clash of their views with Astelli's where the story's drama unfolds.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPS7XdQNOSriJH-GIsVk-3f8Jr07SAp4wVfQ843vbw-zCLamCqRo2wuYuXWeVXAIaedi3SFoc14QmfhZ008V8TeFB_xCTwKYEB-8qXDtOT2Y5xYo98Tkr8f2n7TvHZtf-h5xDNTvkFuVQz/s1600/tumblr_mce02vRwB81rvr9ns.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="187" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPS7XdQNOSriJH-GIsVk-3f8Jr07SAp4wVfQ843vbw-zCLamCqRo2wuYuXWeVXAIaedi3SFoc14QmfhZ008V8TeFB_xCTwKYEB-8qXDtOT2Y5xYo98Tkr8f2n7TvHZtf-h5xDNTvkFuVQz/s320/tumblr_mce02vRwB81rvr9ns.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The game has three different endings, defined by the choices you made throughout the story - essentially choices referring to whether Astelli is able to change the views of the people encountered or not. You will be in the shoes of these people, so it is you who makes that choice and gets to see the outcome. Without spoiling much, my point was to explore the question of to what extent religion shapes man and to what extent man shapes religion. And I believe it works really, really well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg10rTlPwpfudvqa1KqxgKSJVrGVajqzKMDsELuow9chwkDnkyDYB5nc9YlGkGvSfcpk9hBsnStI5TdoELkYS6r5XUKyR00bya3HYIcDh818tL02hZJTswmSefIt627gMWqy6gCSDM5nkYx/s1600/thirteenth02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="187" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg10rTlPwpfudvqa1KqxgKSJVrGVajqzKMDsELuow9chwkDnkyDYB5nc9YlGkGvSfcpk9hBsnStI5TdoELkYS6r5XUKyR00bya3HYIcDh818tL02hZJTswmSefIt627gMWqy6gCSDM5nkYx/s320/thirteenth02.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
In terms of writing, this is probably my finest VN so far. As I converted this from a novella, I decided to keep the descriptive parts in (while most of my other VNs are much heavier in dialogue), and I very much like the effect of having that combined with DaFool's laconic, artsy drawings. I think it's quite appropriate to read that for Christmas and remember where that holiday came from, and what we have made of it today. <a href="http://www.indiedb.com/games/the-thirteenth-year/downloads/the-thirteenth-year-windows-build" target="_blank">Get it here for free.</a>Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-64447743060935761642012-12-20T18:38:00.002+01:002013-01-02T22:01:00.357+01:00Nightmares, anybody?After my last game, I had the overwhelming urge to do something a little more serious again, and there was one idea I had been planning to explore for a few years already - originally in the form of a novella or novel. Well, the visual novel genre felt perfectly suited for that, so I just did it - and this is how <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?tqdyrb3lz1nsd89" target="_blank">The Dreaming</a> was created.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivaWuZyNObge3-lc4s-n-os6QB_73N0MaNa6Uji8SeWc7JEAbJSrW1Ff6MK_380llugMNDJuIA7Xo9VJsLE7khFA1CoQBWAKBj4eNmT_FR4oVEUufb3_fScogMB0PnLcIROyHhmy3TviJi/s1600/screenshot0001____________________________.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivaWuZyNObge3-lc4s-n-os6QB_73N0MaNa6Uji8SeWc7JEAbJSrW1Ff6MK_380llugMNDJuIA7Xo9VJsLE7khFA1CoQBWAKBj4eNmT_FR4oVEUufb3_fScogMB0PnLcIROyHhmy3TviJi/s320/screenshot0001____________________________.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The Dreaming was my first shot at a psychological horror game, and apparently, it was VERY well received as that. My inspiration was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Higurashi_When_They_Cry" target="_blank">Higurashi When they cry</a>, which is why I wanted a sorta chibi art style for the game, though the story is very different from Higurashi, especially considering that it doesn't contain any sort of gore but rather a horror born out of being deprived of safety and security. The story revolves around Gabrielle, a young psychiatrist who, during her internship at a famous mental institute, is given the task to diagnose a patient with an unusual case of schizophrenia. Gabrielle quickly develops a personal interest in the case and starts analyzing Julius, her patient, a little closer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju7a4e5js1Xqmby8bFJWDAh-sFv6gp-lngmyKRoVSAQZ87x_OSOpQrM0Dn_L_j5HYrKtGQSaWHYfKzMqsC_Hv1_Ok5MJOxLzHmUk64D8E7U8f1icy0Mb462VTttFMVMwzXTFs-_SdDYUMS/s1600/screenshot0002____________________.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEju7a4e5js1Xqmby8bFJWDAh-sFv6gp-lngmyKRoVSAQZ87x_OSOpQrM0Dn_L_j5HYrKtGQSaWHYfKzMqsC_Hv1_Ok5MJOxLzHmUk64D8E7U8f1icy0Mb462VTttFMVMwzXTFs-_SdDYUMS/s320/screenshot0002____________________.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As it turns out, Julius's case is quite unusual - not only does he have vivid hallucinations of people that don't exist, he also cannot distinguish them from reality, and in fact, even reality starts looking like a hallucination to him. Gabrielle tries to find out whether there is some trauma responsible for that strange condition - but before she knows it, suddenly things go very, VERY bad, and Gabrielle has to face a situation she's never been in before.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjloIzErAN_ESBP05JN7woW69pCkKT6Z3JF0WrgCqh9c3266Z0oT0OTlSSQn8L5Sx49Yt0qys0E6d_nRI9ojBuTVObgv3NBnLaGu0HEPsRRol0MU1bHhB6AaGO_mK89zxXnn0bs1gtUjUrk/s1600/fan-art-the-dreaming.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjloIzErAN_ESBP05JN7woW69pCkKT6Z3JF0WrgCqh9c3266Z0oT0OTlSSQn8L5Sx49Yt0qys0E6d_nRI9ojBuTVObgv3NBnLaGu0HEPsRRol0MU1bHhB6AaGO_mK89zxXnn0bs1gtUjUrk/s320/fan-art-the-dreaming.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Yup, <i>that</i> bad. And that picture up there is only fan art..<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, The Dreaming was never finished in terms of graphical assets. The story is complete, the game is bug-free, but a few of the appearing characters are merely character sketches, and all the BG art still consists of placeholder photographies. However, some people have mentioned that this really helps creating a spooky, unsettling atmosphere, so maybe the result I got is even better than the result I was trying to achieve. Together with a simple graphical trick I did and a good selection of music, this can be a really scary experience. Though not everything about it is scary.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmNLz_1IGtpcqm7iiylZTA4P09EOMFhO2J64aXi4L1iKxqD32xviepQLTp00ekv2QkpXtBYDEEHqLuJivUX43J8QJ8w4J6bsEQRFoZs9mHiCK51v_F5a10vR4kuzGLHHbgY0pvAML_xrqg/s1600/screenshot0003__________________.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmNLz_1IGtpcqm7iiylZTA4P09EOMFhO2J64aXi4L1iKxqD32xviepQLTp00ekv2QkpXtBYDEEHqLuJivUX43J8QJ8w4J6bsEQRFoZs9mHiCK51v_F5a10vR4kuzGLHHbgY0pvAML_xrqg/s320/screenshot0003__________________.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Some have called <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?tqdyrb3lz1nsd89" target="_blank">The Dreaming</a> "probably the best original English visual novel out there", which I cannot agree on, but it's a pretty darn good, scary and eventually really tragic story. However, be warned: <i>this is not a fair game!</i> I intentionally made this VN very, very hard, leading players into death, suddenly fiddling with the controls or even making decisions on its own. The True Ending isn't easy to find, though those who manage to find it will learn the full truth about the story - and also about the original idea I wanted to explore. So get it - as my other VNs up to that point, it's free!Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-26768088576680669302012-12-17T21:21:00.003+01:002013-01-09T22:44:02.096+01:00Losers and books and succubi, oh my!Having proven to myself that I'm actually able to do a game all on my own, I didn't necessarily want to repeat that experience. So naturally, for the next NaNoRenO, I went looking for a partner-in-creation and found DaFool, generally great guy, talented programmer, ever-improving artist and by now even composer! DaFool and I worked together on quite a few projects now, but this was our first:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQBwPN6OPgaqhEejfwcT6qLKUkvvqxtDXGyjcx4NHLU0CM1QBQAAXyoMPAeLpD0V6mretlJdB3tko1D-KnKX3hjKrufzwCUJBALIAiC7ngTIA0EoU2I1DWdpJb0NFYm_w_gFbLw0YLW8xg/s1600/previewCG.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQBwPN6OPgaqhEejfwcT6qLKUkvvqxtDXGyjcx4NHLU0CM1QBQAAXyoMPAeLpD0V6mretlJdB3tko1D-KnKX3hjKrufzwCUJBALIAiC7ngTIA0EoU2I1DWdpJb0NFYm_w_gFbLw0YLW8xg/s320/previewCG.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<a href="https://sites.google.com/site/daemonophilia/" target="_blank">Daemonophilia</a> (download it <a href="http://download.cnet.com/Daemonophilia/3000-2097_4-10912585.html">here</a>), probably the game with the world's most offensive title, is actually a rather sweet and innocent visual novel (if maybe a little, well, raunchy) about the relationship between two losers. One is a young man who hasn't managed to do anything useful with his life, let alone find a girlfriend. The other is the world's worst succubus. Yes, succubus.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The story revolves around our hero getting into the possession of an ancient spellbook and, not taking it seriously, accidentally summoning said world's worst succubus - a demon whose only task is to seduce men but who actually has no skill at seducing people. Of course, she cannot leave this world until she actually HAS seduced someone, so she's stuck with our poor hero. Not that he didn't already have other troubles of his own, his boss being one of them...<br />

<br />
I designed this game to be a sitcom in the spirit of "Two and a Half Men", so naturally, I included a laugh track. Yes, this is a visual novel with a laugh track. (I think it's even the ONLY visual novel with a laugh track.) It's a very funny and silly story, but also a very sweet one. DaFool did a splendid job creating all the art and even making a little "intro-movie", and I think this work, though it is hardly as epic or as dramatic as my others, can easily stand its own. I wouldn't call this an all-ages game, but it's hardly beyond PG-13 in content, and while there are a few suggestive scenes, there is no nudity of any kind. Unless you count that:<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBWc7CA0KAGbtkExS_L96-Y1Svfi-XNUXVQk_J1nKlLearn_o99M2VrsUcezT_TrjM9P4fnSg8c68vRKprgLZMS0RXauRdIplQKF8F3cyfY-i1NF8bYz0pdSdqEqRIXC6NPxKQLntkwKiC/s1600/Foxtaile__s_Ojinko_by_rioka.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBWc7CA0KAGbtkExS_L96-Y1Svfi-XNUXVQk_J1nKlLearn_o99M2VrsUcezT_TrjM9P4fnSg8c68vRKprgLZMS0RXauRdIplQKF8F3cyfY-i1NF8bYz0pdSdqEqRIXC6NPxKQLntkwKiC/s320/Foxtaile__s_Ojinko_by_rioka.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
...well, actually, she would have been a <i>kitsune</i>, a Japanese fox spirit, and the story was a romance set in medieval Japan, and I had character art produced, I had music produced, I was a little behind on the BGs, but it looked as though the game could still be made - well, but then we all ran into a brick wall, and I still couldn't program (which probably would have saved the project), so - yes, that was the end of that.<br />
<br />
So I was without an active project, and NaNoRenO, <a href="http://lemmasoft.renai.us/" target="_blank">Lemmasoft's</a> annual "make-a-ren'ai-game-within-a-month-contest" was coming up, and I really didn't feel like assembling another team and disappointing everybody again. So there was only one choice: I had to make a game alone, using public domain and Creative Commons resources and teaching myself how to program in Ren'Py.<br />
<br />
And that is how <a href="http://www.renai.us/game/loyalkinsman.shtml" target="_blank">The Loyal Kinsman</a> happened.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirkum9ERrcl6FF9MsvrPHnmHx4OlpdApmL1cpz3fgzCwHan9FZ9zsmYx5AedGrp8hJsY4tHIMlrocUPQxK73OFkVg6Fht8JAV3cww7MuD3oUi0iwSb8uyECBiEnNF3p5Pq_n8c_HUU56jU/s1600/kinsman.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0fhRkkVImpUUsSVWO-OssDurdX5oF5RL0uLL_hjLzeOISrQxDEapAAAbaQ_SHOnYECSnw2uk6ZjoBnEuv4I_2mDJx5b4i85Lyy2f_vc4K4WJXBnKgV2BHYba3Wi2L6u8ZbQxrRkUBabI6/s1600/The-Loyal-Kinsman_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0fhRkkVImpUUsSVWO-OssDurdX5oF5RL0uLL_hjLzeOISrQxDEapAAAbaQ_SHOnYECSnw2uk6ZjoBnEuv4I_2mDJx5b4i85Lyy2f_vc4K4WJXBnKgV2BHYba3Wi2L6u8ZbQxrRkUBabI6/s320/The-Loyal-Kinsman_1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This VN was strongly inspired by <a href="http://www.renai.us/game/wanderingchild.shtml" target="_blank">The Wandering Child</a>, a mystery VN set in Victorian times. My story was also of the mystery genre, only set in the European Middle Ages, at <a href="http://www.burgberwartstein.de/" target="_blank">Castle Berwartstein</a>, which is located less than 100 kilometers from where I live. The plot revolves around investigating the death of a knight, and you (the investigator) play the role of that knight's future squire who, without a knight, probably never will be a squire.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguBQDbjI2FA8geWmjMDstimCcDj-UTbrdgrfPGeSohlOl8KWOrqC6i0YTXv_EZtnMeS_NEyCPYto0LsJDBkovzc_A2PCkFHqT0FgMD3Ph0LnFAix0vT8_lIZb6guCr8VyUOpwy3qfUc3eF/s1600/The-Loyal-Kinsman_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguBQDbjI2FA8geWmjMDstimCcDj-UTbrdgrfPGeSohlOl8KWOrqC6i0YTXv_EZtnMeS_NEyCPYto0LsJDBkovzc_A2PCkFHqT0FgMD3Ph0LnFAix0vT8_lIZb6guCr8VyUOpwy3qfUc3eF/s320/The-Loyal-Kinsman_2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
For art resources, I used public domain photos and pictures I had made myself during a visit to Berwartstein. Also, I used portrait paintings which were also in the pubic domain - just like The Wandering Child had done. Of course, mine weren't Victorian, mine were a little earlier:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirkum9ERrcl6FF9MsvrPHnmHx4OlpdApmL1cpz3fgzCwHan9FZ9zsmYx5AedGrp8hJsY4tHIMlrocUPQxK73OFkVg6Fht8JAV3cww7MuD3oUi0iwSb8uyECBiEnNF3p5Pq_n8c_HUU56jU/s1600/kinsman.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirkum9ERrcl6FF9MsvrPHnmHx4OlpdApmL1cpz3fgzCwHan9FZ9zsmYx5AedGrp8hJsY4tHIMlrocUPQxK73OFkVg6Fht8JAV3cww7MuD3oUi0iwSb8uyECBiEnNF3p5Pq_n8c_HUU56jU/s320/kinsman.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
All in all, <a href="http://www.renai.us/game/loyalkinsman.shtml" target="_blank">The Loyal Kinsman</a> is a little less mysterious than <a href="http://download.cnet.com/Metropolitan-Blues/3000-2097_4-10419955.html" target="_blank">Metropolitan Blues</a>, even though it's a classic murder mystery, but I believe it's much more accessible. MetBlues probably has the better writing (stylistically speaking), but I'm quite proud of the plot of this one too. It's just hard enough that you probably won't figure out the mystery the first time, though not that hard. It's a little more linear than MetBlues too, but hey, I did this all alone, within less than 30 days!<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbqeU2K220F6-onu1-CUQPXZusu9TaKV-lYctARMRQTGe2rAGA7BceFpDIffy8Ihuxs4IETEgU8VRTvtX0KXWJkN3e3kUWQdbfSw8PWi_dPiRcmKME6vCwDWbX2nhtlXCR8CWgtcHUPR__/s1600/Metropolitan-Blues_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbqeU2K220F6-onu1-CUQPXZusu9TaKV-lYctARMRQTGe2rAGA7BceFpDIffy8Ihuxs4IETEgU8VRTvtX0KXWJkN3e3kUWQdbfSw8PWi_dPiRcmKME6vCwDWbX2nhtlXCR8CWgtcHUPR__/s320/Metropolitan-Blues_1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Well, yeah. That was it. That was the first visual novel I wrote and published. <a href="http://download.cnet.com/Metropolitan-Blues/3000-2097_4-10419955.html" target="_blank">Metropolitan Blues.</a> At that time, I had no idea about programming a visual novel, and all I had was an open source graphic filter program, a photo CD of Tokyo and a few friends I found online on the <a href="http://lemmasoft.renai.us/" target="_blank">Lemmasoft Forums. </a>And I had an idea. An idea only a writer could have. The idea to write a story about being unable to write.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRjxiK10TOvoGwXA9b1SU-T1a4X3zt5wUDPWsJolLt78B1GswLossd9S7cYH8g2KcJzTK0yJTAM3As8LTjOO9nA35ibB9U6KBHoS-e4u0jeh50Yhj2qryPVRw1rdT87Kela-WyXTpvmJhT/s1600/Metropolitan-Blues_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRjxiK10TOvoGwXA9b1SU-T1a4X3zt5wUDPWsJolLt78B1GswLossd9S7cYH8g2KcJzTK0yJTAM3As8LTjOO9nA35ibB9U6KBHoS-e4u0jeh50Yhj2qryPVRw1rdT87Kela-WyXTpvmJhT/s320/Metropolitan-Blues_3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
At the time I wrote the story, I had some inspiration, of course, or this whole thing wouldn't have worked, but I knew how it felt not to be able to bring words to paper. It felt as though you were disconnected with the world, as though you were somehow stranded on some distant island, unable to communicate. Having writer's block doesn't mean the words aren't there, but when you try to put them down, they somehow come out wrong, which is why you don't even <i>try</i> to put them down. Yeah, it's that complicated.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxDwyMHTKAxQPs63fSadg2KjbY9e0CmCyDRV7foQO2YilSFwC7AeRNDofPCNx2iVUmaACwIzWHkcob2NMbIVYYc9dsAn1kIpA831WSLLWCICS-Vjdl9v3d8-js_l3D1gnn6vEPJtr-Q55e/s1600/Capture3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxDwyMHTKAxQPs63fSadg2KjbY9e0CmCyDRV7foQO2YilSFwC7AeRNDofPCNx2iVUmaACwIzWHkcob2NMbIVYYc9dsAn1kIpA831WSLLWCICS-Vjdl9v3d8-js_l3D1gnn6vEPJtr-Q55e/s320/Capture3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Of course, I didn't want to bore players to death with the ramblings of an author unable to write, so I couldn't tell this story from the perspective of said author (which, by the way, in the story is the woman you see above). Instead, I needed an outward perspective - someone to approach the situation from an outside angle and to be able to relate to the situation without being in it. So I made up the perfect character for that: A ghost. Or at least that's who he thinks he is.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfXo1_9FyfAYaLuH3Uw0bZxljhiYMBYboiK1inLGoojeV2M1izrEKSarv_3xR6OCvIJo3oJZf2Wc_e2IotYE1uiS1iG0AVdaZKLzCMAVinNKm7XE1AVIZey0PCYbflC8xKW7nH8ReTKOoE/s1600/Metropolitan-Blues_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfXo1_9FyfAYaLuH3Uw0bZxljhiYMBYboiK1inLGoojeV2M1izrEKSarv_3xR6OCvIJo3oJZf2Wc_e2IotYE1uiS1iG0AVdaZKLzCMAVinNKm7XE1AVIZey0PCYbflC8xKW7nH8ReTKOoE/s320/Metropolitan-Blues_4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The protagonist of the story is a disembodied spirit who literally cannot do anything. He can move almost freely (he just cannot leave the city he lives in, Tokyo), he can observe what goes on around him, but he cannot interact with anything in the physical world. To make matters worse, he doesn't know who he is, and he suffers terribly from being all alone because of his lack of interacting with the world.<br />
<br />
Of course, once he meets above writer and starts noticing her and her predicament, he begins to wonder whether he can make a difference after all, and...<br />
<br />
...oh, but that's where the story gets interesting. <a href="http://download.cnet.com/Metropolitan-Blues/3000-2097_4-10419955.html" target="_blank">Why don't you give it a try?</a> It's a free download, and maybe it's a first step into the world of both visual novels and my storytelling for you.<br />
<br />
By the way, 2005? Has it really been seven years since I wrote that story? Wow...<br />
<br />
<br />Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-47892956318535192872012-11-24T20:34:00.001+01:002012-11-24T20:34:30.925+01:00So what is this place?Well then, unlikely visitors, welcome to Tall Tales Productions. This is going to be the work and development blog for me, Taleweaver, and my projects, whatever they may be.<br />
<br />
So what do I do? As my nickname (and the big quill pen above) may imply, I'm a writer. I don't really specialize on one "thing"; I've written everything from poems, short stories and novels to dramas and game scripts. Incidentally, the latter has become a way for me to earn a little extra money aside from my regular day job, and the first game I was paid to write for was this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSDhjZ1fPf3BjNi6PrGyDyKfZxPAp-e4dMzPWUm8K4wlS8UN1m6BBhQkvsrvgvrMFqKcJVqojl_fcn1FKXRKUyAh49cg8pAXVBck7WDQiO1aJ4uV5XWZmEszz2nKqgmMNQg27tEDhr5Cvk/s1600/gameplay_shot_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSDhjZ1fPf3BjNi6PrGyDyKfZxPAp-e4dMzPWUm8K4wlS8UN1m6BBhQkvsrvgvrMFqKcJVqojl_fcn1FKXRKUyAh49cg8pAXVBck7WDQiO1aJ4uV5XWZmEszz2nKqgmMNQg27tEDhr5Cvk/s320/gameplay_shot_2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Yup, that's <a href="http://mangodrop.com/zenith/index.html" target="_blank">Zenith Chronicles</a> by Mango Drop Games, a side-scrolling shooter in which you play a badass red dragon (and its rider). And if you wonder why something like that even needs a game script...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeqN8-TbXCbMqFcAvtm_NT1e_vACF7cNlurlv_SPEBoELTEEgUzhZht1ULAA_fs3eeMEEtNm-QZWhPRO-WIfoAkSdwhL9oPOqqhkCUOY5PL5p5SbMzP1UcnGWmY79M3p7Ji71iAcgs2C-M/s1600/story_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeqN8-TbXCbMqFcAvtm_NT1e_vACF7cNlurlv_SPEBoELTEEgUzhZht1ULAA_fs3eeMEEtNm-QZWhPRO-WIfoAkSdwhL9oPOqqhkCUOY5PL5p5SbMzP1UcnGWmY79M3p7Ji71iAcgs2C-M/s320/story_1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Exactly. This game has a quite intriguing fantasy backstory. One I'm quite proud of. One that will leas the player through a country torn by a terrible war, facing dangers left and right, and one that will force the player to make decisions like that one: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKXyHYcqLKvCnC8bBJJmhyNHiPJuMLAvoDl0fY5c6lDmrY8CSZoK-sNn-8N3B9wZLbANmCs5EjI_IEnrda4ttHLD-rjeB-Wkf6qwwYqHKYDMyDTKXHDWf27xsmMvlIVIF6jI6EhipSC-op/s1600/gameplay_shot_4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKXyHYcqLKvCnC8bBJJmhyNHiPJuMLAvoDl0fY5c6lDmrY8CSZoK-sNn-8N3B9wZLbANmCs5EjI_IEnrda4ttHLD-rjeB-Wkf6qwwYqHKYDMyDTKXHDWf27xsmMvlIVIF6jI6EhipSC-op/s320/gameplay_shot_4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />And these decisions, in turn, affect the flow of the story, affect what allies you gain and what enemies you make, and eventually affect the fate of the game world as a whole. So not only is this <i>one</i> story, it is, in fact <i>many</i> stories - three, to be exact, with the third only accessible once you finished the other two. (Replay value in a side-scrolling shooter! Yay!)<br />
<br />
Anyway, aside from paid jobs, I also did quite a few things just for the fun of it, and for free. All of these things, I will introduce here, in the next few days. Most of them belong to a type of game called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_novel" target="_blank">visual novels</a>, which you may or may not have heard of, but I encourage you to have an open mind. You're missing out on quite a few great stories if you ignore visual novels.<br />
<br />
So just stick with me, and you'll get to know a bit more of my work soon, and also the work of a few of my fellow game-makers. Until then, thanks for dropping by!Taleweaverhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00068432634213116845noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1290441333600843890.post-12789540086735326332012-11-20T23:26:00.002+01:002012-11-20T23:26:43.281+01:00This space reservedContent coming up.
